A Himalayan Harvest Calendar: What Is in Season and When to Travel

October 18, 2026  ·  Himalayan Region

Himalayan harvests do not happen at once. A calendar built only from published reports: morels in spring, apricots in summer, saffron in autumn, and when Uttarakhand is easiest to walk.

If you plan a trip around farming, the month matters as much as the place. This calendar uses only reported dates and our own travel guidance. It is a guide to when things have been reported to happen, not a promise. Weather moves every season.

The calendar

Time of year What is reported Where Source
Late March to April Wild morel (guchhi) collection. One forager gave February to May. Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand Dialogue Earth, 2022
Mid-July to mid-September Apricot harvest, with most fruit picked in July and August. Ladakh ETV Bharat, 2025
Mid-October to November Saffron flower harvest. Pampore and the Kashmir valley Drishti IAS, 2024
March to June, September to November Comfortable walking conditions in general. Uttarakhand Himalayan Region planning guidance

Many hill crops in Uttarakhand, including millets, amaranth and pulses, are harvested in the autumn. Ask your host for the exact stage of each crop for your dates. See our Barahnaja guide.

Reading the calendar

Spring: morels. Gucchi morels are foraged, not farmed, and the harvest varies a great deal from year to year with weather. Read why in our planning note. A visitor should not expect to find morels on demand.

Summer: Ladakh apricots. Ladakh's orchards are reported to cover about 2,612 hectares. The harvest falls in July and August, mostly.

Autumn: Kashmir saffron. The flower harvest runs from mid-October into November. In 2024 the Srinagar meteorological department recorded a 79 percent rainfall deficit between 1 October and 14 November, and production was reported to have declined. A trip timed for the harvest is at the mercy of the weather.

Uttarakhand: Our own guidance is that March to June and September to November are generally comfortable for walking. Monsoon and winter routes depend on district, altitude and road access.

What the calendar leaves out

It lists reported harvests only. Rice, potatoes, apples, tea, honey, spices and many other crops follow their own calendars that we have not sourced here. We would rather leave a gap than guess.

Planning tips

  1. Pick one crop or craft you most want to see, then build the trip around its month.
  2. Keep a buffer day. Mountain roads close.
  3. Ask the host what is happening in the fields during your dates, not just in general.
  4. Expect shoulder-season weather to vary.
