A village stay works when guests remember that they are in a home and a workplace. The notes below are our own guidance for guests on village visits. They are practical courtesy rather than rules from an authority, and your host's wishes always come first.
Photography
- Ask first, every time. Ask before photographing a person, a home interior, a kitchen or a ceremony. A yes to one photo is not a yes to all.
- Children. Do not photograph children unless a parent or guardian has said yes. Do not post a child's photo with their name or location.
- Show the picture. Show people the photo if they ask, and delete it if they ask.
- Posting. Before you publish pictures of hosts online, tell them where you will post and ask whether it is fine. The people in our own photographs agreed to be pictured, and if anyone wants a photo removed from our site they can write to office@himalayanregion.com.
Waste
Remote villages often have no municipal collection. Carry out what you carry in. Avoid single-use plastic where you can, and bring a refillable bottle. Ask your host what they would like you to do with food waste and packaging.
Water
Water in the hills may come from a spring or a pipe shared by many houses and can be scarce in dry months. Short showers, and asking before you use water for laundry, are small courtesies that matter.
Dress and conduct
Dress modestly, follow your host's lead on footwear in the house and in any shrine, and ask before entering a temple or a household's prayer area. Ask before drinking alcohol, playing music or flying a drone.
Farm work
Farm work is led by the host and matched to the season. Join in where invited and stop when asked. Guests should not expect to work in the fields, and hosts should not feel obliged to offer it.
Gifts and money
If you want to give something, ask your host what is useful. Pay the agreed fee in full and on time. Do not hand out sweets or money to children.
Choosing an operator
Ask any operator how the fee is shared, who the host is, how large groups are, and what the conduct rules are. Our own planning notes cover photography, waste, water use and village customs before travel. See the agro-tourism page and our planning guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I photograph people in a village?
Only with their permission. Ask each time, and ask a parent or guardian first for a child.
Should I tip or give gifts?
Agree the fee in advance and pay it in full. If you want to give a gift, ask your host what would be useful.
What should I do with my waste?
Carry it out unless your host tells you otherwise. Avoid single-use plastic.
Is it fine to fly a drone?
Ask first. A drone can be unwelcome to hosts and neighbours.
