Behind the Supply: Hill Villages and Women-Led Groups

October 18, 2026  ·  Himalayan Region

Himalayan produce starts in hill villages. A look at how our sourcing is organised through women-led Self-Help Groups, and the questions a buyer can ask about it.

Behind every kilogram of Himalayan grain, berry or mushroom is a place and a group of people. This page describes how Himalayan Region organises its sourcing, in plain terms, and what a buyer can reasonably ask to see.

How the sourcing is organised

Himalayan Region sources through a network of women-led Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in villages across the Kumaon and Garhwal hills of Uttarakhand, spanning more than 50 villages. An SHG is a small group of local members who pool their work and savings and act together. Sourcing through such groups, rather than through anonymous aggregators, is what lets us tie a batch to a named village or group.

What the groups supply includes wild-harvested and hill-grown products such as sea buckthorn, Gucchi morel, nettle and millets, and the heritage craft of Aipan folk art. Availability depends on the season and the harvest, and we confirm it per enquiry.

What traceability means in practice

For a buyer, traceability is useful only if it can be checked. Ask for:

  • The origin of the batch. The village or group, and the harvest or production year.
  • The batch certificate. Documents that describe the lot you will receive, not a generic data sheet.
  • A sample first. Judge the product, not the story.
  • The terms. Lead times, minimums and packaging are confirmed in the quotation.

We would rather you ask for evidence than take our word for it. Registrations and documents are listed on our certificates and documents pages.

The people in the photographs

The photographs of children on this page were taken in a village with the permission of their guardians. We do not name the children or suggest that anyone pictured endorses a product. If you are pictured and would like a photograph removed, write to office@himalayanregion.com and we will remove it.

Visiting the villages

Some buyers and travel partners want to see the source for themselves. Our agro-tourism page describes the village programmes we offer for groups and hospitality partners.
