Buyers usually meet nettle as a dried leaf, a seed or an oil in a pack. This short film shows the plant before any of that: a nettle growing in the shade of a hillside in Uttarakhand, filmed by our team.
What you can see in the clip
- Toothed leaf edges. The leaves have a sawtooth margin and a pointed tip.
- Fine bristles. The stems and the hanging spikes are covered in short hairs. These are the stinging hairs nettles are known for.
- Hanging green spikes. Long, narrow clusters droop from the stem. These are flower or seed clusters, not leaves.
- Shade. The plant is growing under cover, in soft light, among other green growth.
We are not naming a species from a short clip. Many plants are called Himalayan nettle, and a botanist should identify the one in your supply chain. A general reference describes one of them, Girardinia diversifolia, as a Himalayan nettle whose stinging hairs can cause a painful rash that lasts a week or more, and whose stems yield a strong fibre called allo in Nepal. See Girardinia diversifolia.
If you meet nettle on a walk
Do not touch it with bare skin. Wear gloves and long sleeves if you handle it. Ask your host or guide before picking anything in a village, because the plant may be used by the household.
From plant to product
The three nettle forms we list are different ingredients with different minimums and packs. Compare them in Himalayan nettle: leaf, seed and oil, or go straight to nettle leaves, nettle seed or nettle oil. For a quotation, use the quotation form. If you want to see the hills where our sourcing happens, our agro-tourism page explains the village programmes.
